    Chapter 6

Then there was another go at “Sappy.” It was a very unusual choice for the sessions, as the group hadn’t played the song live since November 1990 (and after these sessions they would only play it a further three times). This version was the most fully produced band version of the song, slightly shorter than previous band versions, with a faster tempo and a noticeably stronger drum part. This version also begins without the instrumental intro on some of the earlier versions.

As for why the song was again revisited, Novoselic says simply, “We liked to play that song. I put that bass line together four years before that, and I thought it was really great, so I never changed it. It seems like nobody ever changed anything else on it, either. You can hear older versions of, like, ‘Lithium’ or whatever, the bass lines are different, or the guitars, or something’s different. But why is it that this song, every time we recorded it, everybody did everything exactly the same? Well, I was totally happy with it, so why change it?”

Actually, the song was not “exactly the same” each time the group recorded it. There were always some variations – the Albini version featured a different guitar solo in the instrumental break, and was in a different key – though they were admittedly minor ones. And there still remained some dissatisfaction with it, as “Sappy” didn’t appear on any of the proposed track listings for the album. “I actually think it’s a pretty good song,” is Albini’s summation. “I don’t remember it being bad. But I think it wore out its welcome on the band, apparently.”

Experience Nirvana Onstage With the Concert Chronicle “Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!”
DVD Debut of Home Video Features Live Performances, Interviews and More
SANTA MONICA, CA — (MARKET WIRE) — October 11, 2006 — Originally conceived by Kurt Cobain the year after the release of Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” “Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!” makes its DVD debut on November 7th, 2006. First issued on VHS in 1994, “Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!” (Geffen/UMe) has now been color-corrected, digitally remastered for the first time in 5.1 surround sound and expanded from its original 83 minutes to include several previously unreleased performances.

A powerful and personal chronicle of the band’s world tour, and continuing through 1993, the period during which Nirvana became one of the most iconic and important bands in rock music, “Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!” features 15 complete songs plus interviews, behind-the-scenes exploits and excerpts from the group’s home video archives. The original video was completed with great care by band members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl after Cobain’s death.

    Universal Music Enterprises

The performances featured in their entirety on the original home video include “Aneurysm,” “About A Girl,” “Dive,” “Love Buzz,” “Breed,” “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Negative Creep,” “Come As You Are,” “Territorial Pissings,” “Something In The Way,” “Lithium,” “Drain You,” “Polly,” “Sliver” and “On A Plain.” This new version adds five previously unreleased 1991 performances from the Paradiso club in Amsterdam: “School,” “About A Girl,” “Been A Son,” “On A Plain” and “Blew.”

The highlights range from Nirvana’s appearance at a huge stadium show in Brazil (at which Cobain and Grohl dressed in drag) and a stage dive by Cobain in Dallas which ended up in a melee, to their brilliant headline performance at The Reading Festival. There is an iconoclastic bash on “The Jonathan Ross Show” in London; a uniquely ironic rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on England’s famed “Top Of The Pops” TV program and there are guitar-smashings which circle the globe (Seattle, Reading, Honolulu, London, Portland, Brussels, Tacoma and New York on “Saturday Night Live”). Loud and demandingly clamorous, sobering and reflective, humorous and insightful, “Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!” tells the story of a scruffy trio from a coastal fishing town rising up to become one of the most influential rock bands in history with irreverence, intense honesty and overriding passion.

    Features the songs:

    Aneurysm

Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana”.
Mi interessava focalizzare l’attenzione sulle sue complessità, i suoi dubbi, i suoi lati oscuri.
