No Seattle – Forgotten Sounds Of the North-West Grunge Era 1986-97
Soul Jazz RecordsLa compilation No Seattle è la perfetta fotografia della scena musicale della costa nord ovest degli Stati Uniti tra la metà degli anni 80 e la metà degli anni 90.
Molte band erano attive nell’area di Seattle in quel periodo e molti erano i generi musicali suonati dai vari gruppi. Su questo doppio cd troviamo il sottobosco del grunge, i “loser”, quelli che non ce l’hanno fatta, ma anche chi poi ha fatto fortuna con altri progetti.
Infatti nella lineup dei The Ones troviamo ad esempio Jack Endino, chitarrista degli Skin Yard e attualmente degli Endino’s Earthworm, l’artefice del sound di alcuni classici come Bleach, Screaming Life, o Superfuzz Big Muff. In realtà però sono molto i presenti illustri: Aaron Burckhard primissimo e dimenticato batterista dei Nirvana, Patty Schemel batterista delle Hole, Dan Peters dei Mudhoney (anche Nirvana), Kurt Danielson dei Tad, e tanti altri.
Sono 28 le tracce, tutte da ascoltare per immergersi nel clima di quegli anni, hard rock, metal, new wave, industrial, country, garage, punk, un vero meltin pop. Spiccano sicuramente i due brani grunge style degli Starfish, canzoni della metà degli anni 90, i Nubbin con altri due brani che ricordano a tratti i Weezer, il grunge di matrice punk-garage dei Thrillhammer (registrato da Steve Albini) e i Bundle Of Hiss con Wench, pesante e irriverente brano suonato dal batterista Dan Peters, Jamie Lane voce e chitarra e il bassista Kurt Danielson. Ottima anche Fields dei Chemistry Set, ispirati ai migliori REM e Magdalena dei Calamity Jane, buona band fine anni 80 in classico stile Riot Girl.
La Soul Jazz Records ha ottimamente confezionato questo doppio cd in un piccolo box con un bel libretto di ben 44 pagine ricco di informazioni, dichiarazioni e biografie delle band presenti con i loro brani.
Un acquisto sicuramente da consigliare a tutti gli amanti del rock alternativo e del grunge.ENGLISH VERSION

The “No Seattle” compilation is the perfect snapshot of the music scene on the North West coast of the United States between the mid-Eighties and mid-Nineties.
Many bands were active in the Seattle area at the time and there were many kinds of music played by the various groups. On this double CD are the undergrowth of grunge, the ‘losers’ those who did not make it big, but who were also there while others were making a fortune.
In fact, in the line-up of The Ones we find, for example, Jack Endino, Skin Yard guitarist and current of Endino’s Earthworm – the architect of the sound of some classics like Bleach, Screaming Life, and Superfuzz Big Muff. In reality, however, there are a number of distinguished individuals present; Aaron Burckhard – earliest, forgotten drummer for Nirvana; Patty Schemel of Hole; Dan Peters of Mudhoney (also Nirvana; Kurt Danielson of Tad and many others.
There are 28 tracks which plunge you directly into the atmosphere of those year; hard rock, metal, new wave, industrial, country, garage, punk – a true melting pot. Certainly the two pieces by grunge style band Starfish from the mid-Nineties stand out, Nubbin with two songs that are – at times – reminiscent of Weezer; the garage-punk array of Thrillhammer (recorded with Steve Albini); plus Bundle of Hiss with the Wench, a heavy and irreverent song played by drummer Dan Peters, Jamie Lane on vocals and guitar plus bassist Kurt Danielson. Another good song is Fields by Chemistry Set inspired by the best of R.E.M., then there’s Magdalena by Calamity Jane – a good band in the classic style of late Eighties Riot Grrrl.
Soul Jazz Records has packaged this excellently as a double CD in a small box with a nice booklet of 44 pages packed with information, statements and biographies of the bands present and their songs. A purchase will definitely be recommended to all lovers of alternative rock and grunge.
