Il titolo, ripreso nell’urlato ritornello, esprime una necessità empatica: Riuscire a mettersi nei panni di Cobain per capire le motivazioni del suo gesto finale.)

Un lui che appare tranquillo solo quando c’e qualcuno a fargli compagnia, un lui che ora riposa in cielo e che rimarrà nel pensiero di molti (Kurt?). E poi quei continui (“troppo presto”/ “Troppo tardi”) che a seconda dei vari accostamenti enfatizzano una prematura dipartita o di un ritardato tentativo di salvataggio. Al di la delle smentite di Neil Young, oltre a considerare che l’album ha lo stesso titolo della canzone ed e dedicato a Cobain, non sarebbe una forzatura interpretare questo testo come un ricordo sentito e commovente di una persona fragile, forse distrutta anche a causa della moglie. Apensarla cosi furono in molti, soprattutto i fun.)

ABOUT A BOY –Patti Smith-

Con “Gone again” Patti Smith tornò a percorrere la sua carriera artistica, interrotta da una pausa durata 10 anni. Nel disco era incluso il brano “About a boy”, Dedicato a Cobain, che gia nel titolo evoca quel “about a girl” scritta per la ragazza con cui Kurt stava allora e inserita in Beach.
La Smith immagina che Cobain se ne sia andato verso una nuova destinazione, dirigendosi verso la saggezza, verso una nuova forma di pace, verso il grande vuoto. Immagina che abbia trovato ospitalità in qualche locanda della felicità. Il testo è ottimista e prevede per Cobain una nuova vita più serena, lontano dai tormenti terreni. La Smith cerca di giustificare il suo gesto così: “Lui se n’è andato / Per lasciare una scia / Dietro di sé”, come voler dire che la morte di questo “piccolo ragazzo / che non crescerà mai” (e qui emerge un certo affetto materno) sia stata da lui voluta per insegnarci qualcosa, per lasciare un seguito o un ultimo messaggio d’addio.
